Two Killed, One in Custody Following Active Shooter Situation at Florida State University

Authorities have identified Phoenix Ikner as the individual responsible for the shooting incident at Florida State University (FSU), confirmed during a Thursday evening press conference. Ikner, 20, is the son of Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy Jessica Ikner and was a member of the Leon County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) Youth Advisory Council.

Investigators revealed that Ikner used a deputy-issued firearm during the incident. The weapon, which was recovered at the scene, was originally a service weapon legally purchased by Deputy Ikner after it was decommissioned and had since become her personal property.

“This event is tragic in more ways than you people in the audience could ever fathom from a law enforcement perspective,” said Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil. “But I will tell you this—we will do everything in our power to prosecute and send a message that this kind of violence will never be tolerated in Leon County, or anywhere else in this state or nation.”

Earlier reports from CNN identified the suspect as a young man from Tallahassee who had grown up in the area.

The shooting occurred just after 12:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday. At 4:10 p.m., the Tallahassee Police Department posted an update on X (formerly Twitter), announcing that the FSU campus had been secured.

“Multiple law enforcement agencies remain on site for the ongoing investigation,” the department stated. “The Student Union and surrounding area are still considered an active crime scene. Individuals should not return to the area for any reason.”
