Armed U.S. Citizen Hijacks Belizean Flight, Dies After Being Shot by Onboard Passenger

An American man was shot and killed after hijacking a small passenger plane in Belize, leaving two people injured during the mid-air crisis.

The hijacker, identified as Akinyela Sawa Taylor, seized control of the domestic flight at knifepoint with 14 passengers on board. During the ordeal, two passengers were injured—one of them critically after being stabbed in the back.

The aircraft, which was en route from Corozal to San Pedro, flew erratically along the coast near Belize City before safely landing at Philip Goldson International Airport, with fuel nearly exhausted. Taylor was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy said officials are working closely with Belizean authorities on the ongoing investigation. “We share their commitment to ensuring Belize remains safe—for its airlines, its tourists, and its borders,” the official stated. One of the injured passengers remains in critical condition.
