Melinda French Gates Opens Up About Divorce from Bill Gates: "I Had to Leave"
Melinda French Gates has candidly shared that a lack of honesty in her marriage to billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates ultimately led to their divorce. Speaking during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Melinda explained that the absence of honesty eroded the foundation of trust and intimacy in their relationship.
“To have a trusted relationship—which is what I wanted in marriage—both partners have to be honest with one another,” the 60-year-old philanthropist said. “And if you can’t, you can’t have intimacy and you can’t have trust. So in the end, I had to go.”
Melinda and Bill Gates ended their 27-year marriage in 2021. The couple shares three children. Now back in the public eye, Melinda is promoting her new memoir, where she reflects on pivotal moments in her life, including her high-profile split from Bill Gates.
