Five dead, almost 700 injured as powerful explosion hits Iran’s Bandar Abbas.
A massive explosion at the Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas, southwestern Iran, killed five people and injured over 700, according to Iranian state media. Videos verified by CNN showed thick gray smoke rising from the port, with authorities linking the blast to chemical storage.
Emergency services initially reported four deaths and over 500 injuries. Surveillance footage from the Mehr news agency captured the moment of the blast, believed to have originated in a warehouse. Helicopters were seen battling the ensuing fire, which scattered debris across a wide area, damaging many port buildings and shattering windows kilometers away.
Some reports indicated that people were trapped under rubble. The port has been closed, and maritime operations suspended. Injured individuals were transported to hospitals in Bandar Abbas, and officials announced that the fire has been contained.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered an investigation, sending the interior minister to oversee the response. A government spokeswoman said the explosion likely involved chemical containers, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
Shahid Rajaee port, one of Iran’s largest, spans 2,400 hectares and handles around 70 million tons of cargo annually, including oil and general freight.
